Dejo por hoy el boceto de la tercera ilustración de la novela de Redwall. En esta ocasión, Matthias parte en busca del búho blanco Captain Snow (Capitán Nieve), quien puede darle pistas para hallar una anhelada espada perdida hace años.

Here I post the third sketch of another illustration based on the Redwall novel. This time, Matthias seeks to find Captain Snow, who might be able to tell him of the whereabouts of an anciente lost sword.

¡Hola! Hoy les dejo la siguiente ilustración en la que estoy trabajando. Esta vez se trata de un encuentro inesperado entre el aristócrata Squire Julian Gingivere y Matthias el guerrero, en un granero lleno de fardos de paja de trigo o avena. En el bocetito me tomé un par de libertades, y quise mostrar a Matthias haciendo una pequeña reverencia desde una de las columnas, mientras Gingivere lo observa con curiosidad.

¡Estoy terminando de leer el primer libro de la saga de Redwall, una fábula de aventura épica, y me está encantando! Volver a leer algo del genéro fantástico después de muchísimo tiempo, y sentirme tan entusiasmado, me ha hecho recordar con qué disfruto más dibujando, y la razón por la que comencé a dibujar hace ya casi seis años. Lo cierto es que estoy encontrando en esta saga un camino nuevo que me anima a dibujar con una ilusión que ahora veo he estado perdiendo con el paso de los años.
Así que les dejo unos bocetitos de una de las escenas del libro, en que los animales de la abadía de Redwall discuten sobre cómo defenderse del segundo ataque de las ratas lideradas por el malvado y salvaje Cluny the Scourge. El que más me gusta es el último de todos, el tercero.

I'm about to finish reading the first book in the Redwall series, and I'm so pleased with it! It's been a long time since I enjoyed reading fantasy this much, which made me realize, and remember, the reason why I started drawing almost six years ago. I've always loved drawing creatures and animals, so I feel as though I have returned home, somehow.
Anyway, I'm posting some thumbnail sketches from a scene of the book in which the Redwall 's animals discuss the best way to repel the second attack from the fearsome Cluny the Scourge. More to come soon!

Acá van los dibujos principales, y en unos días la ilustración completa con color y todos los "chiches". Nuevamente, el dibujo en limpio tiene menos fuerza que el boceto, como suele ocurrir en esta profesión, pero mi atención ya no se centra en dicha "fuerza", sino en la elegancia final. Me he propuesto que cada dibujo posea una cualidad única, es decir, que los dibujos finales no intenten imitar a los bocetos, y que posean una cualidad que aquéllos carezcan. Además, todas las texturas, manchas y sombreados que suelen tener los bocetos las añado hacia el final de la ilustración digital, de modo que en el fondo ambos dibujos están "compitiendo" en planos ligeramente diferentes. De todas las maneras, hay muchísimo camino por recorrer en el pulido de la línea y su fluidez, y creo que éste es un principio adecuado.

Ya está, mi primera ilustración entera digital. Ahora que la veo terminada, creo que puedo y tengo que mejorar muchísimas cosas, y que tendré en cuenta para las siguientes, cosas tales como el movimiento, la perspectiva, el encuadre, el color... Pero ésto ya está acabado, cumplió su función como introducción a un mundo nuevo, y ahora me toca mirar hacia adelante, ¡y seguir caminando!

Una prueba de composición para la primera doble-página del libro para niños que pretendo terminar algún día próximo. Es un escaneo en cuatro partes, ya que la ilustración es bastante larga (alrededor de 50 cm.). De todas formas, ceo que podría hacerle un repaso a esta ilustración, ya que si bien no es redundante con respecto al texto, no termina de reflejar el humor algo oscuro que caracteriza el cuento. Barajaré otras opciones, y sobre todo, experimentaré con el color, que aunque el actual es fiel al estilo de los años '70, quizás funcionaría mejor con un color más saturado y potente.

Un tributo a DiTerlizzi que debe tener ya alrededor de tres años. Creo que por entonces las influencias que tenía de varios ilustradores de fantasía eran demasiados evitendes, pero por suerte he logrado desvincularme en cierta medida de ellos, pero conservando algunas cosas.
Este bicho es un brownie en camino de convertirse en un boggart, ya que está robando lo que se supone es un cacho de pan. Algunos ven una patata, otros un saco, otros un gusano...sea lo que sea, lo está robando, eso es lo que importa, y por la cara de pena que tiene, o está con cargo de consciencia, o lo acaban de descubrir delinquiendo.
En fin...

A little tribute to DiTerlizzi I did about three years ago. By the time I was strongly influenced by him and other fantasy illustrators, but luckily I was able to evolve a little bit and took an interest in other areas rather than myth and northern folklore. The fellow above is a brownie on it's way into transforming into a boggart, for he is stealing what looks like a piece of bread. Some people see a sack, others a worm, and others a potatoe. Whatever he is carrying on him, he is stealing it, and that's what really matters.! By the look in his eyes, this brownie seems to feel a little bit bad about the situation, or maybe he's been exposed by who knows who.
Anyway...

Quería dejar esta media página ilustrada de un cuento para niños que espero terminar de ilustrar un día no muy lejano. Escribir la historia me ha sido dificultoso (nunca pensé que escribir una historia larga con pocas palabras pudiera dar tanta guerra), pero aún más lo ha sido el adaptarme al estilo de dibujo que creo mejor se acomoda al ambiente general de la historia. Y encima, he querido emular los clásicos de los años '60 y 70'. Hasta ahora tengo el
Storyboard, dos ilustraciones a color, otra dibujada, y muchos, muchos bocetos y pruebas. ¡Esto hay que terminarlo!
Por cierto, quiero agradecer a Fede y Vico (http://blog.absens.net/) por ayudarme a escanear el original (un poquito más grande que un A4) y por enseñarme un par de truquitos del Photoshop.

¡Hola! Actualizo el blog para dejarles dos links. En el primero, Illustrophile ha mostrado mi blog en el día de ayer, cosa que agradezco muchísimo a Charlene Chua, y en el segundo, se pueden ver unas imágenes de la pequeña exposición colectiva en la que formo parte en la biblioteca de la Facultad de Bellas Artes. Es posible que Localia venga la semana que viene a visitarnos y ver el espacio que comparto junto con Erick Miraval, Paula Heredero, Lidón Ramos y Quil Páez. Mil gracias de nuevo a Luis Mayo por su entusiasmo y dedicación, y a todos mis compañeros, con quienes ha sido un gustazo montar la expo. Por último, me gustaría agregar que estoy algo ocupado últimamente, pero que espero poder seguir actualizando con más frecuencia el blog dentro de unas semanas.

Hi there! I just wanted to post the following links. The first one is from Illustrophile, where I have been featured yersterday. I would like to give my sincerest of thanks to Charlene Chua for this opportunity of showcasing my blog. The second link takes us to the my faculty's of art library, where I am exhibiting some pieces of watercolour illustrations along with other friends: Erick Miraval, Paula Heredero, Lidón Ramos and Quil Páez. It was really great to share this little space with them, great fun indeed. I would also like to thank Luis Mayo for organizing this event, and for his support. The Bu-uhh

A pariah par excellence, the Bu-uhh is a familiar outcast. Excluded from its forever unstable and ineffable families, this rare specimen grows darker in time. It is yet to be determined if this is due to a defensive camouflage or just ineffable stupidity.
In addition, the Bu-uhh is known to dream with female Bu-uhh’s corpses, beetle juice, and, occasionally, with what Dr. D. Morris would call “naked apes armed with two sharp canines, chronic skin cancer, and a filthy temper”, which they exorcise through ineffable charcoal doodles on the ineffable cave walls where they live in.

The inventions of the Wow are a total waste of time.
Luckily, and for the good of the animal kingdom, only one specimen survives nowadays.

Estas imágenes pertenecen a un nuevo sketchbook en el que he comenzado a trabajar y experimentar. Se trata de otro proyecto trimestral universitario, que tiene como tema principal "el objeto". En éste, el cuaderno de artista, estoy experimentando con un poco de todo: bolígrafo negro y azúl, bolígrafo fino celeste, edding negro con realces de edding blanco de punta media, pilot...
Lástima que en algunos de los escaneos algunas valoraciones tonales en los trazos hayan perdido intensidad, pero mejor ésto que nada.
¿Alguna sugerencia o recomendación, crítica constructiva o desquiciada?

In this new sketchbook I am working with black and blue Bic, black and white eddings, Pilots and light blue Bics. The Onegulp is known for its affectionate and humble nature. They are notorious for letting themselves be eaten up by hungry predators.
There was a time in which predators took advantage of this situation, but as the chasing and rough playing were gone, they soon found it very boring and lost all interest in the Onegulps.
Nowadays, the Onegulp no longer has natural enemies, and its population has grown by 227% in thirteen months and seven minutes.

The Yonk

The Yonk

The Yonk has its little whims, just like everyone else. Of all of them, devouring a common plant scientifically named “Sapiensallaround” is its favourite. When eaten, this plant has an immediate effect on the Yonk. An unknown world is displayed before its eyes, where some odd beasts (“naked apes”, according to Dr. D. Morris) dressed up in suits, ties and newspapers, all squashed up in the Subway, in a Monday’s small hours, can be glimpsed.
Such vision fills the Yonk with depression.
Once the effects of the “Sapiensallaround” are gone, the Yonk has the feeling that the world, his world, is a better place to live in.

Another sneak preview at my university project! Though I tried to make the watercolour painting look as spontaneous as the sketch, I was not able to achieve it. The scanned image lost some shades, but it still looks quite similar to the original. I hope you like it!

Observant and thoughtful by nature, the ? is a creature obsessed with existentialist arguments, which keeps it awake night after night , a fact that reduces its life span by two hundred and thirty-six days.Questionings such as “why am I who I am, but don’t cease being when being? Who? What happens if I now stand here, and then there? What’s hidden below that rock? Where has the Aa-uukaa-u-u got those ears from?” are a fine example of its reflective practise.
The ? has a prodigious mind indeed.

The Gadgetrymum is quite fond of radios, spoons, sponges, stamps, pins, hairpins, fluff balls, nails bits and, buttons (scientists have yet to determine how the gadgetrymum has got hold of these objects).
So fond of them that it actually suckles them and raises them.
The Gadgetrymum is extinct.
Don’t ask why.

The Jinxsonite

The Jinxsonite is the beast with the highest mortality rate of the animal kingdom.
It is estimated that in one brood, and only once per year, the Jinxsonite gives birth to eight hundred and forty-three thousand seven hundred and sixty-three dot two (843.763,2) cubs. Yes, eight hundred and forty-three thousand seven hundred and sixty-three dot two (843.763,2) cubs, of which only twenty-four dot zero five survive. This fact marks the Jinxsonite for the rest of its life. Socially secretive and repressed, the Jinxsonite avoids mating at all cost, for that would mean to bear the loss of eight hundred and forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty-nine dot fifteen Jinxsonite cubs. Thus, mating amongst these beasts is almost accidental, which would come to explain the huge amount of cubs in each brood.

¡Entregas, entregas, y más entregas! Ahora mismo me veo un poco como este hombre: rodeado de moscas que por mucho que intente ignorarlas, me quitan el sueño.

Afortunadamente, y pese a ellas y sus siempre molestos zumbidos, el tiempo pasa irremediablemente. Los proyectos van realizandose poco a poco, aunque no siempre con el nivel técnico que quisiera. A veces es mejor ser prácticos y cumplir con el trabajo, y dejar de lado el perfeccionismo para otros momentos más oportunos.

Estos son algunos de los bocetos de perfiles realizados para un proyecto universitario. Se trata de una idea más bien sencilla: crear un casting de personajes de cencia-ficción con rasgos humanos y animales entremezclados.
Este es mi primer acercamiento al proyecto.

These are some of the profile sketches done for a university project. The main idea is quite simple: to create a cast of sci-fi/fantasy characters with a mixture of animal and human features.
This is my first approach at the subject.

Unos apuntes realizados en el Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid. La verdad es que las personas son realmente interesantes cuando ignoran que alguien está observandolas atentamente. Pareciera que son incluso más auténticas cuando logran relajarse y dejarse llevar por el momento. Entonces, su expresión entera cambia.

Here are some of the first sketches drawn at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. People are so interesting when they ignore someone is watching them closely. It seems to me they become even more unique. They just relax and their whole expression changes.
I hope to see some improvements in following weeks!
